Goals

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other Calef researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Surname Variants

Most of the Calefs in the United States are descended from Robert Calef, who was a well-known opponent of the Salem Witch Trials and may have been the first to use the Calef surname variant. His father and grandfather, who lived in England, reportedly spelled their family name Calfe or Calfee. Further research is needed to confirm precisely when these variants arose.

There are also several surname variants found among the descendents of Robert Calef. As these spellings are confirmed with original sources, they may be added to this project.

Task List
